Weight loss goals appear to be everywhere. We admit that 5 years ago when we became Personal Trainers, our training told us that weight loss was a goal too. So as all good students do, we go out into the world and aim to help people lose weight. Because after all that’s the goal right? Well after taking this approach, it didn’t sit right with us. We hated making people feel like they had to lose weight to succeed. We got sick of the disappointed looks on faces if a weight goal wasn’t met. We could see people were focused on the scales and tying their worth to a number. They were not seeing how much their bodies were capable of now and what in their life they were doing that they couldn’t do before. Then it hit us, and we needed to share why your goal is never weight loss.

Your weight is made up of your bones, muscles, organs, tissues and mostly fluids. The balance of these components of your body is impacted by activity, stress, hormones, intake, excretion, weather, function and everything in between. Our weight can change by up to 1-2 kgs IN A DAY! You can weigh in in the morning and weigh significantly more at night. So, pinning your hopes on a number is useless when setting a weight loss goal. You may have succeeded in the morning but by night, you have failed.

Look at a Boxer or MMA Fighter. They are placed in weight classes to ensure a fair fight. When it comes to weigh in, their goal is not to lose weight to ‘make weight’ for their weight class. His goal is to meet the requirements of category in which he aims to fight. It allows him to fight and achieve the title of champion.

Weight loss is the means to get you to your goal

When working with parents, we ask them for their goals. There is always one goal to lose x amount of kgs. In their mind, the weight loss is the goal. But think deeper. Why do you want to lose weight? What is it that the weight loss will allow you to achieve?

  • Will you be able to play with your kids?
  • Will you be able to catch them when they run off?
  • Will you have the strength to pick them up when they need to be carried?
  • Will it improve your confidence?
  • Will it help you keep up with the demands of work?
  • Will you be able to obtain a job you love?
  • Will you be able to take on a challenge of an MMA fight, marathon or obstacle course?

If you chose any of those goals above, what results do you need to achieve your goal?

  • Improve your strength
  • Improve your stamina
  • Increase your energy levels
  • Improve your mental health and self worth
  • Lastly, lose weight

Actions to take to achieve your goal:

  • Participate in regular physical activity specific to your goal
  • Eat nutritious foods to fuel your body
  • Change your mindset
